Materials Recycling Weekly

Recycle doesn’t just have to mean putting the right rubbish in the right coloured bags so the Recycle Police don’t get you. And it’s also not just about doing stuff to save our seriously belegued little planet, to stop ourselves feeling guilty about the size of our great big, lumbering, carbon footprints. It can also benefit us personally. It’s about getting the computer repaired, rather than just dumping it when it no longer has as many Mega-Pixel Hard-Ram Giggle-Bites as the one reviewed in the latest issue of Wot Computer. For one thing, even if you bought your computer yesterday, there’s still going to be dozens of new models in Wot Computer that came out five minutes ago and are far, far brainier, so it’s pointless to try to keep up. And, secondly, most of us only want the damn thing to send emails, shop at Amazon, play the odd game, and look at pictures of people doing things minus their clothes. And for these purposes you may as well just go and find some sad, neglected old PC that someone has thrown into a skip.

In fact, talking of skips. Another thing you need to have in this brave new world we are opening up for you is, no shame! Find the right skip – or several skips – and you could furnish a house. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, hense the necessary creation of that Great British Institution, The Car Boot Sale (the American equivilant being, the garage sale.) These events are generally teaming with thrifty folk with no shame, rifling through clothes, flicking through old LPs, trying to get something that’s priced at an extortionate 50p, for a more reasonable 20p.

Get to such events really early if you want to find the best bargains. But, be warned, you’ll be competing with people who have decided to try to make a living out of looking through other peoples’ rubbish. In fact, maybe there’s an opening for you there too. If you have a passion for, say, vintage clothes (these days ‘vintage’ can mean 1970s, 80’s, or even 90’s clothes) or old vinyl records, or anything really. If what you have knowledge of is sufficiently obscure, then are, iyou sR&B soulm/a You and unless you are designing nCoadvmemory . It’s about repainting or reupholstering old furniture or just moving stuff around your home to change the look of the place at little cost to yourself. A change is as good as a new three-piece suite.
